Baked Apple Cinnamon Donuts

I saw this recipe on Pinterest and followed it over to Mommy Hates Cooking; I was excited to try it out for breakfast for the weekend! These are very tasty and I am a big fan of being able to whip up some donuts in my oven! I finally got to use my doughnut pan for the first time, and can't wait to try other recipes out with it. They were super tender in texture and the cinnamon sugar topping added a fantastic crunch and flavor to them. We would definitely make these again, though I'd double the recipe as my hungry boys downed the 9 doughnuts that came from this recipe in no time flat and looked like they both wanted more!

The original recipe said to bake for 10 minutes, but mine needed about 16 minutes per batch; so keep an eye on yours around the 10 minute mark just to make sure they're not done, but they probably need at least 15 at only 325 degrees. Even when fully baked, mine still had a slightly moist appearance, so be careful not to over bake.

Baked Apple Cinnamon Donuts slightly adapted from Mommy Hates Cooking
Makes 6-9 donuts
Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour
6 TBS sugar
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking powder
6 TBS milk (I used 1%)
1/4 tsp white vinegar
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup applesauce
1 TBS butter, melted

Topping:
1 tsp cinnamon
2 TBS sugar
1 TBS butter, melted

Directions
  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
  2. In a large mixer add in the dry ingredients then mix in the wet ingredients until the batter is well combined.
  3. Spray a Doughnut Pan with cooking spray and then carefully pour a ring of batter into each opening, fill about 3/4 full to allow a little room for the doughnuts to rise.
  4. Bake in the oven for 15-16 minutes, or until nice and brown and cooked through (test with a toothpick if unsure).
  5. While the doughnuts are baking set aside the 1 TBS melted better in a bowl. Combine the cinnamon and sugar in a separate bowl.
  6. Once the doughnuts have cooled for a few minutes, dip the tops in the melted butter and then dip in the cinnamon sugar, twisting to get a good coating. (You can do this on both sides if you'd like, but you'll need to double the amount of topping ingredients).
